Compensating for Potential – The DIRAK M6x12 Grounding Countersunk Screws with Segment Cutting Edge and Scraping Tooth
01 Requirements
A Conductive Connection
The main purpose of potential equalization is as a protective measure against electric shock and overvoltage. In case of error, for example if a part of the housing is carrying voltage, this would lead to a hazard for persons and operating equipment. Painted or powder-coated metallic base materials cannot be used without pretreatment of the points that connect into the potential equalization. If conventional fastening elements are used, the contact surface must be bare or kept free of paint. This step is time-consuming and cost-intensive.
Grounding countersunk screws, developed by DIRAK and certified by the VDE (Association of German Electrical Engineers), are fitted under the screw head with a segment cutting edge and scraping tooth. This unparalleled advancement allows for electrical and mechanical contact with metallic base materials without extensive pretreatment. Grounding countersunk screws ensure potential equalization in both a counterbore and a cylindrical bore. DIRAK offers the M6x12 grounding countersunk screws with a metric thread cutting and a standardized metric thread.

02 Product advantages
The Functionality of the DIRAK Grounding Countersunk Screws
- The segment cutting edges and scraping tooth on the countersunk head of the screws enable a mechanical and electrical connection between two sheet metal parts.
- The functionality of the grounding countersunk screw is given both with a countersunk hole and with a cylindrical hole.
- Tested according to DIN EN 61439-1 (VDE 0660 part 600): 2012-06 “Low Voltage Switchgear Combinations”.
- Drive hexagon socket according to DIN EN ISO 1066 No. 30.
- Low screw-in torques due to sliding coating.
Unique
Segment Cutting Edge
In a cylindrical hole the double-sided scraping tooth, which are offset by 90°, are responsible for ensuring reliable potential equalization on the edge of the metal sheet. As the screw is turned in, they scratch the painted edge of the hole free to a depth of max. 170μm and thus make electrical contact with the metal. The purpose of the segment cutting edge is to center the screw in the hole.
Srcaping Tooth
In a countersunk hole the segment cutting edge is responsible for the electrical contact with the metallic base material. The double-sided design of the segment cutting edge guarantees reliable potential equalization. While cutting the layer of paint max. 170µm deep, there are no paint chips in the countersunk hole. The segment cutting edge and scraping tooth increase the underhead friction in both a countersunk hole and a cylindrical hole, thereby improving the protection of the screw against coming loose in the connection.
Variants
Metric Thread Cutting to DIN 7500
Due to the out-of-round cross-section and the slightly conical shape, the chipless thread forming begins already with the first turn of the screw. The surrounding material is consolidated and the female thread is formed. The play-free seating offers protection against the screw coming loose by itself under dynamic load. Thanks to this chipless tapping there is no need to remove chips, cut the thread or use any additional nuts.
Metric
The standardized thread with metric dimensions and 60° flank angle can easily be screwed into the precut thread.
